The Parnon mountain range accommodates the most important Syrian juniper (Juniperus drupacea) population in Greece. Our country is the only place in Europe where the species is distributed. The Management Body of Mount Parnon, Moustos, Mainalon & Monemvasia, aware of the high ecological value of the species, as well as the limited knowledge regarding its reproductive biology, is implementing a pilot study to monitor its natural ecosystems. The project titled “Actions for assessing the population structure and function of the Syrian juniper (Juniperus drupacea) and the reproductive biology of the species” aims at assessing the natural regeneration of the Syrian juniper, as well as mapping and studying the population structure of the species in Parnon. OikoM Ltd. will undertake the project, which will include: The project is expected to have impact on both the available scientific knowledge and management of the species, contributing to the development of a tool for taking management measures for Syrian juniper populations in Greece, and the Eastern Mediterranean in general. Speech by Dr. Valia Daskalakou on the study during the conference organized by the Management Body of Parnon, Moustos, Mainalon & Monemvasia on September 28, 2020, in the Spiritual Center of Sparta In October and November 2020, visits were organized in the area of Mount Parnon to record and collect data. A few photographs from the visits are shown below.
